The wonderful world of dashcams is finally becoming a big thing in the USA. But what if you don’t have the dough for an awesome fully featured cam? Why, do I have the solution for you!
Use an old smartphone!
I have both an old iPhone 4 and an old Galaxy S3 Mini. I upgraded from those phones but kept them anyway...because I’m sentimental about my old tech.
Both phones have a plethora of free dashcam apps. However, apps for Android phones will have many more features, use less battery, and will be able to have a “stealth” operation with the screen off.
However, since Miss Tesla has my Galaxy S3 Mini (which was originally my dashcam), I’m now using the iPhone 4, plus one of the many dashcam apps.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I would not recommend buying a phone. Even the cheapest working iPhone 4 is about as expensive as a cheap dashcam.

You’d be surprised at the number of ‘successful’ dashcam channels on YouTube that use smart phones instead of dedicated dashcams. HaloMastemind117 included. And he’s the biggest in the community.

What do you use to mount it? I have an old iPhone 4 laying around this is a great idea.

You can use any cool mount, I used a: http://ilovehandles.com/shop/barnacle-…
At the time, there was one for $1 on eBay, so I went with it. It’s a little wobbly on broken roads, but it does the job.

Another plus is you usually get better audio and video quality than most cheap dash cams.
